Appearance - From viewing this front cover I can tell that this magazine is aimed at woman over the age of 18. It's aimed at females because of the colour usage and because of some of the cover lines included such as 'hair, makeup, nails' and 'the 8 words single girls never want to hear'. Pink is also a very feminine colour to use as it's usually the colour related to girls, and a variety of shades of pink have been used for this front cover. I can tell it's for people over 18 due to the sexual related cover lines. Since my magazine is aimed at girls, I like the idea of using pink and black to entice my female audience. This magazine could fit into audience code E to C1 because of how older woman can also relate to it as well as younger woman.
Fonts - There are a lot of fonts on this page which on paper may make it sound overcrowded, but that's certainly not the case here. Although a lot of fonts have been used, there is at least two of the same font spread across the page to make it appear professional. What makes this magazine good as well is the use of font size and colour. They're quite different sized and that makes the more important things on the page stand out from the rest, which again makes it look professional. The colour of the fonts have a wide range making it interesting and attractive to look at.
Picture - Miranda Kerr is shown in a long shot showing her entire clothing and make-up. It's good to use a long shot for a fashion and beauty magazine so that the audience can see the fashion first hand on the front cover, which further entices them to the magazine. Without even viewing the text on the page, you'd be able to tell it's a fashion magazine due to the long shot of her clothing. I think this is a really effective way to sell a fashion magazine and I may use this idea for my own.
*Note: This contents page is from another cosmopolitan magazine but I will follow the same skills and analyse it fully.
Appearance - I notice from this contents page that cosmopolitan have inserted a lot of images and a small amount of writing. This is a good way of attracting a younger audience, or even an older audience who work a lot and want to relax and read something that's not too heavy on the eyes like a lot of writing would be. I like this idea a lot because my target audience ranges from 15-30 year olds. You can still tell that this magazine is aimed at woman over 18 due to the erotic image on the page and the cover line titled 'inside men's minds'. I like the way this contents page is laid out, with images around the page and text aligned to the bottom right.
Fonts - The fonts for the page numbers and information is very plain and simple which I think is imperative for something like that so it's easy to read. The colour of the subheadings are in blue which again makes it simple to read and also gives it a sophisticated and professional look. I intend doing this for my contents page so that readers can find it easy to understand.
Picture - Most of the images on this contents page are close-ups showing exactly what either make-up brand it is, what colour it is and what it looks like on the skin. This is a good thing to do if the magazine is promoting make-up brands and other people's make-up styles. There is a woman in a long shot showing off her outfit which actually matches the nail varnish shown on the page. This is a good thing to do because it's showing the audience how to mix and match products and what products match other products. Since I'm doing a fashion and beauty magazine I intend on doing something like this.
Appearance - This contents page follows the conventions of a typical existing double-page spread which I think makes it look professional. I really like this idea for a double-page spread as the layout is simple to follow and that would appeal to my audience. This double page spread looks as if it's aimed for an older audience because it's usually adults who would be interested in 'nearlyweds'. This double page spread is also easy on the eye and is very pretty therefore attracting a more younger audience. I like the way they've matched the colours from the pictures to the colour of the text. E.g. the colour of the car is the same colour as the 'nearlyweds' which shows the magazine has a consistent house-style and makes it look professional. I like this idea a lot and hope to mimic something like this when I come to do my double-page spread.
Fonts - There aren't many fonts on this double-page spread which makes it easy and professional. However, there are still very exciting fonts that have been used. For the main text there is a simple font whereas for the subheading 'nearlyweds' it cursive and exciting which gives the double-page spread some excitement rather than it looking very plain with only a few plain and simple fonts.
Picture - There is quite a few images on this page which as a young adult I really like the idea of. Instead of just one simple image there's another two dotted around the page which I think is a effective way to attract a younger audience since they probably find the images more interesting to look at. The images range from a medium to long shot showing the woman model outfits which relates to the genre of the magazine which is fashion. This is a good way to keep the viewers interested.
Remember that in your deconstructions - you need to include details of what conventions or techniques you would utilize in your own product :)
