Magazine deconstruction 2 - Vogue

Appearance - From this magazine I can tell that the target audience is possibly aimed at 17-30 year olds. I can tell this through how expensive the magazine is. Judging from the price I would put this magazine in audience code D to B as the audience need to be earning a wage to be able to afford this high end fashion magazine. This magazine seems like it's purely a woman empowered magazine unlike Accent magazine. I can tell this through the use of cover lines 'girl racer', 'who's that girl' and 'beach chic' which all obviously are aimed at woman. This is inspiration to me because my magazine is aimed mainly at woman.

Fonts - There are only a few fonts used on Vogue's front cover which I personally think makes it look professional. Although this magazine front cover only has two fonts that have been used, it has two very contrasting fonts which actually complement each other making it look professional and exciting. The masthead font also matches some of the cover line fonts on the page ensuring that the magazine doesn't look to heavy on the eye, and therefore gives off a more simplistic and beautiful appearance.

Picture - Kate Moss is portrayed in a medium shot in this image and is shown wearing a white and yellow top with heavy eye make-up and white painted nails. In the background is some purple flowers which all complement each other well creating a beautiful appearance to the magazine. The colour chosen for the cover lines and masthead go well with the colour of her outfit. Since it's quite a simplistic image, Kate Moss is wearing quite heavy eye make-up which gives the magazine excitement. This is an idea I will use if I try and create quite a simplistic magazine appearance but with added excitement.

Appearance - Vogue have carried their ongoing simplicity through to their contents page by keeping it simple with only one image and clearly ordered with subheadings and a clear font. I like the idea of this because it's very easy on the eye and although it's simple yet again, it's follows a very beautiful style and structure. I like the way the text is aligned to the right of the page yet there is text to the left on the image which doesn't necessarily follow generic conventions but it's very unique and still easy to understand. The masthead has been carried on through to the contents page which is a very usual but effective way of claiming their magazine.

Fonts - The fonts on this page are yet again, very simple and go with the appearance and structure of the magazine very well. They have still used the contrast of curly fonts and simple fonts such as Arial together to create an ongoing style for Vogue. The colours used for the text is basic red, black and white which again because their target audience is 17-30 year olds really appeals well to them since they are more advanced and will be attracted to more images, less colour and usually more text. The text in red is to make the subheadings visible to readers. I like the idea of this, and I hope to mimic this onto my magazine.

Picture - This model in this image is portrayed in a long shot displaying her clothing, this is to perhaps show the audience what styles are to come within the magazine. I like how there's only one image used on this contents page. However, I may include a range of images on my contents page to make it more unique and to attract my more younger aged audience. The picture fits in with the house-style of the magazine and colours on the contents page. The grey background of the image matches with the colours red, white and black which makes the page look professional and elegant.

Appearance - Vogue have really gone all out for this double page spread. Not only is the house-style maintained onto these pages but there is also a lot of text and a variety of images. Although it contains a few images and a lot of text it still manages to look professional and it's also very easy to understand since it follows a mainstream and simple layout.

Fonts - Some of the fonts used match with the fonts used on the front cover and contents page which is really professional of them to do. For example, the 'beauty, health & fitness' is 'Times New Roman' just like some of the text on the other pages. I will use this idea when I come to produce my magazine because it ensures the magazine has a professional vibe. There are other fonts used, and some text has been made bigger than other text on the page such as the 'M' and 'N'. This is a very effective because it gives the double page spread some excitement, especially how they're coloured red which makes it stand out.

Picture - There is a picture of perfume in a long shot to show exactly what they are. The image has been taken at a low angle to show how good the perfume actually is. This is a good thing to do because my audience is teenagers so I will do something like this as teenagers usually love perfume. There is also an image of another magazine vogue have, which is probably a good way of them advertising their magazines. It's a good way of showing that vogue have a variety of magazines.

  1. Remember that in your deconstructions - you need to include details of what conventions or techniques you would utilize in your own product :)
