Magazine deconstruction 1 - Accent

Appearance - From the appearance of this magazine, I know that its genre is fashion and that its target audience is aged around 16-30 and is aimed at both genders. I know it's aimed at females because of the colour pink which is usually associated with females. I will use this technique when I come to design my magazine because my magazine is aimed at woman and I can tell that this magazine has been successful. I can also tell it's aimed at males because of the colours black and gold. Not only are the colours an obvious factor that this magazine is aimed at both male and female but the fact that one of its cover lines is 'shades of red & sleek black for men', concluding that men will also find this magazine useful. This magazine looks like it would fit into audience code categories E to C1. It appeals to a younger audience because of the amount of detail entailed. If you compare it to something like 'Luxe' magazine, you can see the difference in the target audience because Luxe is very plain and simplistic, yet Accent includes a range of fonts and colours making it attract a younger audience.

Fonts - There are many fonts on this magazine front cover. From Times New Roman to curly italics this magazine is bursting with exciting fonts. If I were to give this magazine some constructive criticism on what I wouldn't do when I come to make my magazine, I would say that the fonts with an outline and no fill colour doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the font. Although they have stuck with three fonts for the cover lines it still makes it lack sophistication in that way. When I come to do my magazine I will take this into consideration and ensure that my fonts compliment each other on the page. I do like the fact they've used Times New Roman on their cover as I really like that font and will use in when designing my magazine because a lot of fashion magazines use this font so it has proven to be successful.

Picture - The picture has been taken at a medium shot so that the upper part of her body is in the picture. She is wearing simple white clothing which fits with the colour theme perfectly and I notice that her outfit isn't too complicated and doesn't include any heavy jewellery. This may be so it can attract a male audience to its magazine. I like the simplicity of the outfit since the text is probably the main focus of the page due to the range. It prevents the magazine front cover from looking too heavy and complicated which again allows it to attract a wider audience of female and male.

Appearance - The contents page of this magazine fits in with the front cover. It's very detailed and contains a lot of images that would attract a female audience. It still fits in with the target audience of 16-30 due to the fact there's more images than just basic text. If I compare this to a magazine such as 'Luxe' you can see the difference in target audience between the two. Luxe has more written information and is very basic whereas this contents page has more images and the writing is slightly bigger. It doesn't particularly follow a generic layout as there is images on the left side as well as the right side and it's the same with the text. This again is because of their chosen target audience. It's very modernised and stylish which appeals to young adults.

Fonts - The fonts such as Times New Roman have been carried over from the front cover and is now situated over the page for the subheadings. I like this idea because it has kept a similar style throughout making the magazine organised and professional. The colour of the subheadings are red and some of the images on this contents page are also red so that's another way they have continued the house-style to make it appear professional. The main subheadings which have been capitalised and made bigger are coloured black. This also fits in with the house-style correctly because I see from the front page that black is one of the main colours they use and the fact they have continued this through onto the contents page gives it a professional and organised look. The subheadings also stand out even though they're just black, but this is because they have made them slightly bigger than the rest of the text, which again makes it look professional.

Picture - There are a range of shots used on this contents page. The first shot in the top left corner is a medium shot of a woman. You can clearly see she is wearing make-up, jewellery and some type of on trend top. This again reminds the readers that it's a fashion magazine and gives an insight to what's in the magazine. Then the other shots are of fashion and beauty items showing the readers what type of clothing is on trend at the minute, which links back to the audience. Finally, there is a long shot of a runway model wearing the latest fashion. This would really appeal to a younger generation because they are the ones who like to be modern and fashionable so this magazine was designed for them.

Appearance - This double page spread completely matches the contents page and front page of Accent magazine. It fits with the theme of the magazine, and again, it has a lot of images on it rather than text. This magazine really has its audience in mind whilst designing this. Usually teenagers like to look at pictures rather than a lot of text or usually they like text to go with an image as you can see on the right hand side of the page. I can see a lot of well known celebrities on this double page spread and most of them are fashion designers which fits in with the genre of the magazine.

Fonts - The subheading 'Pretty and put together' is again in Times New Roman which shows Accent keep the same house-style throughout. This is what I intend doing with my magazine to ensure it looks professional. The pull quote on the left of the page is also in Times New Roman which yet again makes it look professional. They have also used other fonts too for 'Fashion Favourites' which gives the page some extra excitement. I intent doing this so it isn't just the same text constantly throughout. I will keep my audience in mind just like they have, and since my audience is teenagers and young adults I will also use different font at certain times and quite a few images to entise my chosen audience.

Picture - Most of the pictures are full length long-shots of woman wearing stylish clothing. I really like how it has different fashion and styles on the right side of the page aligned with text to give information on the outfit. I intend taking this inspiration and doing something similar for my own, but I will state how and where you can get these outfits from a store in the north east. I also like the close-up shots of the fashion designers along with some text about them.

Magazine re-construction: Front Page

My institution logo

I have created my own institution logo and company which is going to publish my magazine. In one of my previous posts I stated that if I were to choose an institution to publish my magazine, I'd choose Hearst corporation, so I decided to create a simple one which follows the structure of their logo, but I added some originality to it to make it my own. I decided to name it after me since it's my magazine and that's usually what some institutes do. I added a neutral colour such as a pastel blue to enhance the excitement of my logo. I also added dropped shadow to make it look more realistic and I bolded the 'corporation' to make it stand out more.

Blogger App

I thought it would be to my benefit to install the blogger app so that if I have any work that needs to be uploaded from my phone I can straight away add it from my phone to blogger therefore speeding up productivity.

Time management 1

Reader Profile

I did a reader profile for my ideal reader. I have portrayed their hobbies and interests and what I feel would allow me to reach my perfect target audience. Having this audience would allow me to create the magazine I have in mind, and because it attracts 15-20 year old's, I can take some of my own interests and include them in because I am within this age range.

Target Audience Profile

Pitch and Audience Feedback

From doing this pitch and getting audience feedback I have learned the things I need to do to ensure I get the best out of my magazine production. I think the audience feedback is very good constructive criticism and I have taken everything said into consideration. For example, I understand that I need to think of a colour scheme for my magazine and add an institution. I will do these things to further my research and to build up so much research that my finished product is professional.

Audience feedback: Video

Here I took a video interviewing Rebecca Browne on regional fashion magazines. From this feedback I now know that a fashion magazine/website/billboard is wanted around the North East. This feedback helped me further my decisions on what style I will be doing in the production of my main tasks. It helped me further my decisions because now I know what teenagers like to read e.g. Vogue and Cosmopolitan so my magazine will be on the same lines as these magazines. From this video I can see that her style icon is Kendall Jenner which affects my magazine perfectly since Kendall Jenner is a huge style icon for not only Rebecca but a lot of girls out there. I wasn't planning on including anything to do with music in my magazine but since this audience feedback states that teenagers like listening to music, I will alter my magazine and insert music so that it will appeal to teenagers. Rebecca stated that she uses social networking sites such as Twitter and Instagram so I will perhaps put links to social networking sites or competitions with a Twitter page so show my interaction with the audience.
